about

This track is part of the fall 2018 issue of Junk Drawer Magazine, a prompt-based literary and art magazine. I chose to respond to the prompt "taught to haunt." The song is built around the sound of howler monkeys, which I recorded on my phone in Costa Rica.

lyrics

Howler monkeys sitting on the canopy,
Singing through the night, but they’re way out of key.

Oropendola free from the aviary,
Sounding like a synth emitting harsh frequencies.

Mangrove fingers searching below the palms,
Feeling for the status of a fading pulse.

Try to distance myself from ancestral flaws.
Are we taught to haunt, or is it nature’s fault?
